How to control Powdery mildew of cucurbits?

Disease - Powdery mildew

Causal organism - Podosphaera xanthii

Symptoms - Bottlegourd is a cucurbitaceous vegetable crop grown successfully in tropical & sub tropical regions. The first sign of powdery mildew is that there is pale yellow spots comes on the leaves.

This disease is mostly found in mid to late summer. Firstly, it starts out as small, white, round powdery spots on the top sides of the leaves but quickly cover whole leaves (from top to bottom) and stems.
The older leaves are more susceptible to this disease. When there is infection of this disease at large extent, the fruit ripens prematurely

Damage - In severe cases, yield of this crop reduces & fruit quality also decreases due to which the farmer is not able to get proper price for his crop.

Control - Spray fungicide, Karathane 1 g by mixing in 1 litre of water. Since this is a fungal disease, Spray 0.2 % Sulphur fungicide. This spray should be done 2-3 times at the interval of 8-10 days.

Integrated Disease Management (I.D.M.) - Use resistant varieties. This disease can be managed by using less amount of nitrogen in the field.
The diseased plant should be thrown out on showing the sign of this disease in the field.
