Water & weed management both are most important operation for any crop to get optimum yield.
As sorghum crop requires more water, so it is mainly grown in rainfed situation.
Irrigation is not required in the sorghum crop sown in the rainy season. However, irrigation may be required in case of no rain for a long time.
In summer crop, irrigation should be given at an interval of 7-10 days.
There are mainly three critical stages of irrigation for sorghum crop – booting stage, blooming stage (flowering) & milky dough stage (grain formation).
The infestation of weeds always seen in the early stages of the crop & is more in rainy season.
To get good yield of sorghum, three weeks after sowing, by weeding, along with weed control, air circulation in the soil and moisture in the soil is also preserved.
Therefore, weeding should be done 15-20 days after sowing. If for some reason weeding is not possible, then immediately after sowing, 0.75-1.0 kg of Atrazine should be mixed with 700-800 litres of water and sprayed at the rate of per hectare. But keep in mind that there should be proper moisture in the soil at the time of spraying.
Due to weeds, the yield of sorghum is reduced by 30 to 40 percent.
