For nursery preparation, sowing is done in May-July & February-March. In rainy days, the plants become transplantable in 4-6 weeks and in winter in about 8-10 weeks.
For planting in one hectare area, 1 kg seeds are required & 300 gram seeds are required for hybrid varieties. Seeds should be sown in an area about 200 m² to prepare the nursery.
Seed beds of 3 m length and 1.2 m wide are required. The seed bed should be made 10-15 cm high from the ground. 20 kg of rotten cow dung manure, 100 grams of super phosphate and 50 grams of murate of potash should be added to the bed.
Seeds should be sown in lines. Distance from line to line should be 10-12 cm, distance from plant to plant should be 5 cm.
Seed depth should be 1-1.5 cm. Seeds should be covered by one centimeter thick layer of cow dung manure and soil mixture. In rainy days, the plants become transplantable in 4-6 weeks and in winter in about 8-10 weeks.
The plant should be irrigated lightly before being uprooted from the nursery. Transplanting of seedlings should be done in lines in the prepared field.
On transplanting the nursery, the distance from line to line should be 60 cm and distance from plant to plant should be 40 cm. Transplanting should be done in the evening. The field should be irrigated after transplanting.
