Generally potatoes are the backbone of vegetable garden & it is a temperate climate crop. During the growing season, potato favours moderately cool temperature.

Vegetative growth of potato plant occurs best at 25°c temperature while tuber development occurs at temperature of 20°C.

If the temperature rises above 30°c then tuber formation adversely affected.

Second fortnight of October is the best time for planting of potatoes.

Potatoes can be grown in all types of soil except saline & alkaline soils. Loamy and sandy loam, rich in organic matter are the best soil for the cultivation of potato crop & soil should be well drained.

Optimum pH value for potato cultivation should be between 4.8 to 5.8.

Potato should be cultivated in rows. In hilly areas, potato crop is cultivated in summer season.

Potato is a starchy, tuberous crop from the solanaceae family and it is the fourth largest food crop.

Potato contains high levels of potassium & it is also a good source of vitamin B and minerals such as phosphorus and magnesium.

If it is cold at night and hot in the day, there is no risk of diseases on this crop.
