Suitable Seed rate & Sowing time for Pigeon pea

12-15 kg seed per hectare should be given in pigeon pea crop. If pigeon pea is taking with other crop then 5-6 kg seed per hectare should be given. Wheat, onion, moong and sorghum can be taken as intercrop with pigeon pea.

Sowing of pigeon pea should be done from 15 June to 15 July according to varieties. Seeds should be treated with captan or thiram before sowing.

Sowing should always be done in rows. Distance from plant to plant should be kept at 30 cm and row to row should be kept at 60-75 cm at the time of sowing.

For late sowing varities sowing should be done upto 15 July & distance from plant to plant should be kept at 30 cm and row to row should be kept at 85-90 cm.

Sowing should be done with the help of seed drill machine because seed falls in the field equally to a similar distance and fixed place. By this method of sowing, seed falls to a certain depth in the field.

This increases the growth of plants and increases the yield of crop.
